it's a long time coming...

Every time I hear some Wingnut go off about the evils of Jimmy Carter, I try and tell them that he is a better man then they will ever hope to be and he could out think them armed with only his brain stem. Here is an interview in Der Spiegel (don't worry, this is the english version ;P ) with the best EX-Pres ever Jimmy Carter

Carter: The fundamentalists believe they have a unique relationship with God, and that they and their ideas are God's ideas and God's premises on the particular issue. Therefore, by definition since they are speaking for God anyone who disagrees with them is inherently wrong. And the next step is: Those who disagree with them are inherently inferior, and in extreme cases -- as is the case with some fundamentalists around the world -- it makes your opponents sub-humans, so that their lives are not significant. Another thing is that a fundamentalist can't bring himself or herself to negotiate with people who disagree with them because the negotiating process itself is an indication of implied equality. And so this administration, for instance, has a policy of just refusing to talk to someone who is in strong disagreement with them -- which is also a radical departure from past history. So these are the kinds of things that cause me concern. And, of course, fundamentalists don't believe they can make mistakes, so when we permit the torture of prisoners in Guantanamo or Abu Ghraib, it's just impossible for a fundamentalist to admit that a mistake was made.

...

Carter: Unfortunately, after Sept., there was an outburst in America of intense suffering and patriotism, and the Bush administration was very shrewd and effective in painting anyone who disagreed with the policies as unpatriotic or even traitorous For three years, I'd say, the major news media in our country were complicit in this subservience to the Bush administration out of fear that they would be accused of being disloyal.. I think in the last six months or so some of the media have now begun to be critical. But it's a long time coming.

...

Carter: I think the administration learned a lesson, but I don't see any indication that the administration would ever admit that it did make a mistake and needed to learn a lesson. I haven't seen much indication, by the way, of your premise that this administration is now reconciling itself to other countries. I think that at this moment the United States and Israel probably stand more alone than our country has in generations.

Now compare Carter to the current administration and weep.

Without a doubt, the greatest failing of this administration has been an unwillingness to admit to any mistakes, and thus an inability to correct any of them. I don't know if it's fundamentalism (of any stripe), stubbornness, fear, ego or an inferiority complex, but it has undermined everything that this administration has done, because even the best and brightest make mistakes, and mistakes unchecked can destroy anything.

As Peter Tosh would say ...

True ... very true ... Seen?

I just happened upon the Carter interview in Der Spiegel. It should be in USA newspapers. But hey. I was 12 years old when Carter was elected and his was the first election I actually followed in the news (given that Ford was unelected due to Nixon's tomfoolery). I liked him then and liked him today. Since Carter is a devout Baptist his abhorrence of mixing church and state in the US are particularly powerful. And unlike our Commander in Chimp, he is not an unread, unschooled, illiterate moron.

Carter: builds houses for poor people.
Reagan & GW Bush: clear "brush" on their extensive private dust ranches.

Carter: writes books in spare time.
Reagan & GW Bush: spend spare time clearing "brush" on extensive private ranches.

Carter: nuclear engineer in US Navy.
Reagan & GW Bush: avoided military service.

Carter: spends much of term in office getting to roots of Israeli-Arab conflict, brokers Camp David Accords between Sadat and Begin.
GW Bush: Dismisses negotiations as something for weak pansies, and a lot of work. Instead spends time clearing "brush" on extensive, private ranch.

Too Bad George Bush, Sr. was not the father of GW Bush, since it would not surprise me if GHW Bush would offer a similar assessment to the consequences of this administration's abandonment of diplomacy and negotiation in the Middle East. Oh the nostalgia for a SMART Bush with the first name of George !!!
