So, while slowly coming out of the coma of sleep…
Yeah…
When you start to come out of the blackness of sleep, drift up through your dream state and up into wakefulness, those gauzy snippets of visions that you see while in that dream state do trigger all sorts of memories.
Or at least that was this morning for me.
Back in the day, when the new upstart PBS station in doomfield started up in 1980 it was kind of thrown for a loop since the older established station did not want to play nice. So, they went with the “Toss stuff at the wall and see if it sticks” method of TV programming. One of the first things they did was a Music Video Show (being mostly hippies they never really got the hang of the whole “Copyright thing” and had the keep changing the name of the show as other copyrighted Music Video show names. It started as FM TV and had DJ’s from the Alt FM station out of Ft. Collins that would play almost anything (within FCC guideline and not top 40), so that you would go from the Sex Pistols, to Handel, to the Residents in one set.
It was bootiful man…..
So, now they had a Music Video show to do….much of it was bootleg Vidoes of concerts, but some of it was videos that bands were putting out (This was before MTV, and before MTV came to Doomfield, which was ’82).
Now, the guys producing the show (it ran for three hours in the morning and at night on the weekends) were….eclectic to say the least. Sort of like say how Random and I are musically today, and there were vids that always made it on to every shows play list, and here are the ones that hit me this morning while waking up to NPR.
First up:
Snakefinger – Man in the Dark Sedan
Yeah…it reeaallly make no sense what so ever, enjoy.
Next up:
The vid that will induce either nightmares or make you say “GAH!” with much force.
Renaldo and the Loaf - Songs For Swinging Larvae.
The Residents – The Act of being Polite
Vic Trola (Tiny Barge)- They Won't Let Me Play My Rock & Roll Guitar In The High School Marching Band
Yeah, check out the clothes…
The last two are not the actual vids from KBDI, but two great King Crimson songs.
King Crimson - Elephant Talk
King Crimson-In the Court of the Crimson King
So there you go, a small tiny peek into what was Alt music circa 1980/1981.
UPDATE:
How could I forget?!?
Total Coelo - I Eat Cannibels
Yes, these should have you thinking WTF?! but it was the '80s and everyone who had a band made videos and they were put on the TV.
